Should you run tap water first for a few seconds if it hasn't been in use for a while?
The answer of this question, according to some health experts, is YES, you should.
Some recommend that before drinking tap water or using it for any type of consumption purpose, you should let it run for at least 30 seconds if it hasn't been used for several hours.
This is because water sitting in pipes can pick up lead from pipes. When you allow the water to run for a few seconds, most of this lead will run out initially when the pipe is turned on. So the water that comes out after this time has elapsed has chances of having much less lead, and, thus, is safer to consume.
